today i feel like blogging about Yoo JaeSuk. if you have watched korean variety shows before, you would most likely have seen him. he looks like this:
hhahaa so funny right! x) this is actually one of the more flattering pictures of him haha. although he is a comedian, or 'gagman' as they like to call it in korea, he is a very well-respected and well-loved man in literally the whole of daehanmingu or south korea. im guessing its because of his rags to riches kind of appealing story. but most importantly, he is someone who despite all his success, he is someone who remains very much grounded and grateful and appreciative of all that he is and has become. i think this quality of gratitude and humility is so appealing to people because thats who Jesus is in essence, that something that people gravitate towards naturally and desire in a person worth their time.
to me, i like the relationships he has with the people that he works with. to us audiences, these are usually the hosts or the 'members' as in Running Man, who usually have to complete a task together or in talk shows, will talk about something that people would be interested in. i love how he has a very amiable relationship with everyone that he works with. that jovial character makes working with him very pleasant. from talkshows and all, i can tell that he is someone who takes cares of his juniors, or hoobaes in korean and his peers well. and something that is less known would be that he is actually behind alot of the popular plotlines/character lines that make other members/hosts/guests very likable to the audience too. as such, the entire cast is being brought up a whole class in terms of quality and likability to the audiences. there are so many examples that i can think of off-hand now that celebrities/idol groups that have become more likable (and being liked is always good for a commerical pop celebrity) since they have been on the shows that he emceed. that influence that he has makes him a cut above the rest. his words have a weightiness about them that makes people want to listen to him and hear what he has to say, nonsense or otherwise. that is also so like Jesus, when he said "follow me" strong uncouth rough fishermen leave everything that they had and followed him. if that isnt cool and that isnt influence, i dont know what is.
i also like how he is very honest and candid at the appropriate times. he gives up his 'face' and goes all out to do a body gag or to go off on a witty tangent (from the topics at hand) to make that particular situation really funny and even memorable! so many times i have to pause what im watching to laugh my guts out at whatever just happened.
im not a korean and i havent been watching the older and other channels' shows that he hosted/is hosting, because they have been lost to the non-korean internet world, but i can imagine how important a part he played in those shows and more importantly to those people's lives. and thats why i really like watching korean variety shows (less dramas now, no time to devote hours) because it revelas so much about the human spirit, relationships and inter-relationships. i like how another language can sometimes express and is able to express what the english language is limited at. (yes, you colonial hangovers, english can and is often limited by itself). and that is why i always have a strong urge to learn korean while im watching these shows, to be intrigued by something that is so foreign to me yet so much able to express words, thoughts, emotions and different combinations of words thoughts and emotions that i might have sometimes. i think that is also why many people wanna learn korean, not just to understand and communicate to their idols without translation, or for that matter any foreign tongue, because language is a way into a world of new perspectives to understand, perceive and learn new things.
going back to Yoo Jaesuk, he is one of reasons why hallyu is so widespread and rampant around the world now. and i like to believe (for my own justification) that there is always something to learn out of the things that may seem superficial and stupid and nonsense, lke how some see kpop, because everything is inter-connected with everything else.
